I would never give a utility company the free hand to my bank account, I use payment card at paypoint always have plus using it in the co-op I get me member points.

They think they will be protected by the Direct Debit "Guarantee" and that they will save money by letting the supplier grab their money.

    Wrong!

He is paid £1.3 million a year, but I very much doubt that he earns that much.

British Gas boss Bentley admits call centre abuse from customers angry at price rises

Angry British Gas customers infuriated by rising energy bills are deluging its staff with increasingly aggressive complaints, the company’s boss has admitted. Managing director Phil Bentley – who earns £1.3million a year – revealed that customers struggling to pay gas and electricity bills are taking out their frustrations on his call centre staff and workers on the road. The company boss said in a candid email to staff: ‘We have seen a groundswell of anti-British Gas comments, with increasingly aggressive tones. All our call centres are under extreme pressure from more angry customers struggling to pay bills.’

The high number of complaints comes as British Gas continues to refuse to pass on the fall in the wholesale price of gas to its 9.2million gas customers. According to industry estimates, the wholesale price of gas has fallen 9.4 per cent. Yet, British Gas has only reduced the cost of electricity by five per cent and have not made any reduction in the price of gas despite other companies doing so.....Read more here---: British Gas boss Bentley admits call-centre abuse from customers angry at price rises | This is Money

Re: British Gas tariff changes: what does it mean for me?

British Gas has announced simplifications to its tariffs after 'loss of trust'.

Loss of consumer trust has prompted British Gas to simplify its tariffs. Managing director Phil Bentley admitted that British Gas "had not made it easy for customers" and that there was a public lack of trust of the energy industry. The energy provider will offer just two tariffs – variable and fixed, and pledged to offer more understandable billing, with a complete breakdown of all the costs.

Adam Scorer of Consumer Focus welcomed the changes. "The penny has dropped. We welcome the news that energy companies recognise that the ways in which they have constructed and sold tariffs has confused, antagonised and alienated consumers," he said.....Read more here---> British Gas tariff changes: what does it mean for me?
