ours is through optical feed and works on everything from games console to tv to virgin box all we had to do was change the setting on tv we don't change anything for sound when we change from hdmi1 to hdmi 2

There is an optical feed on the back of the surround sound, but it looks like a coax socket.

it should be square rubber socket and glows red it doesn't look like a coax socket

As a fall back if his surround sound is digital and has optical digital connection then he could plug that direct into the TV using optical digital which would bypass HDMI sound, but not advised as you lose Dolby Tru Logic doing that

Been through every menu on the surround sound. It does date back to 2008, so may just be incompatible.

Even changed the HDMI cables to 1.4

Indeed. There is one on the TV but it says optical on the ss, but it is obviously not. As niddy says, using HDMI it should work.

It will say Digital and be a wee square thing, black with a couple of sliding doors that when open glows red - however not to worry as we'll get it working via HDMI which is better than Optical Digital anyways....

Ok, as we know there is no Optical Digital on this model and the suggested method is to use RGB.

Can you clarify on the back of your TV do you have the red/white RGB slots? Should have a red and white then next to it a red/green/blue thing too?

If so make sure that the red and white connections on your phono cable is connected to the red and white phono sockets on the right hand side of the RGB component phono connections (socket labelled audio out)...

Basically try the red/white connections first..... (next to RGB on back of TV)

They're the experts.... although it should work in HDMI but if you cannot locate the 'Line' button on the remote I can't help
