Re: Can they take money from my account?

I would have to agree with this.... even if you just opened another account with Santander or any other bank (pending on who your debts are with setting up a wee diary will help).

I would hate to think that they did do it and you would have to go through the hassle of recovery in which you would go a while without that money

Just be aware I have seen one (but only one) instance of someone who opened a new account with the same bank (and it was Santander ) who, after a couple of months, found the recurring payment authority transferred to their new account by their bank.

Shouldn't have happened but it did........

Theres the rub, getting a refund 6 weeks later doesn't help you if you're unable to live for those 6 weeks as you were so reliant on it........

I agree, its not unheard of for banks to do crazy things you thought were not possible.

And although you could get the money back, that doesnt help when the mortgage goes unpaid or you go hungry till they decide to put it back.

Grrrrrr so much for the promise that all people should have access to basic banking facilities.

          Another 'In Theory' banking lie.

Unfortunately in the short term I would have to suggest that using Think banking is the lesser of two evils until a new basic account is sorted out (fingers crossed).

In theory - yes Santander should cancel and recurring payment authority as per the payment services directly, however frequently they don't.......

In theory - report your card as lost, and a recurring payment authority should not continue to the new card, but it has been known and on the cases I am aware of Santander were the bank that allowed it........

So I'm afraid that the ONLY safe foolproof way to prevent a PDL company from helping themselves to your money is to set up that parachute account the details of which are given to no-one.

@HenryJSB - I think you need to set up a diary showing all your accounts so that you can get a little more detailed help. Once we know all your creditors, accounts etc then there may be another basic bank account out there that you can apply for thats not linked to one of your creditors.

However as it stands, personally, I would not advise putting your wages into that Santander account.

Although everything is fine in theory in terms of your bank should refund you etc, it doesn't help you at the time your account is wiped out and you have no money for food or petrol to get to work

That's the issue. I have another thread in another part of the forum which is 4 pages long about the fact I CAN'T open another account. Niddy is currently helping me with that. In the mean time I'm looking for a short term solution so I can stop using this awful ThinkBanking that costs me 15 quid a month.
