    Is there any such thing as 'road tax'?

    Cyclists often report that aggressive motorists justify their behaviour on the basis that they alone pay "road tax". But, there is no such thing.

    It's still a tax, so yea in my view it will always be another scam to line the pockets of parliament, so thus a tax hence road tax
    I'm the forum administrator and I look after the theme & features, our volunteers & users and also look after any complaints or Data Protection queries that pass through the forum or main website.       But road tax was abolished in 1937 and replaced by Vehicle Excise Duty.

        VED is a tax - as I say!

            To quote the website...
            "Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) is an annual tax on the ownership of road vehicles..."

            If VAT was renamed as Value Added Duty it'd still be a tax. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...

                There isnt anymore, it stopped being road tax years ago, its now called a VED, but as alot of us are oldschool its still reffered to as road tax.

                  I understood that it was last hypothecated (link) as "Road Fund Tax" when Churchill was the Chancellor of the Exchequer and, thereafter, it was just paid into the Consolidated Fund of general taxation.
