By making an offer to settle you've started a conversation which implies you're willing and able to pay (albeit not enough). They might even check your CRA file to assess your financial situation. Do you own a property with a mortgage which would be visible on your CRA file?

This debt has been deemed unenforceable so ignore PRA's correspondence unless you are sent a Letter of Claim.

Debt purchasers never tire of banking your money however small the payments. They deal with hundreds of thousands of debtors, so even if they're only receiving £1 token payments from each of them, they're still generating a substantial income effortlessly.

Thanks Di and Roger for your advice,

To be honest, they're more than welcome to check my credit file, my situation is exactly as I tell them it is, with debts exceeding £26000. I have no tangible assets and I rent my property. I did, however, specify that a full and final payment would be through a relative as funds for that type of payment simply don't exist.

On a slightly different note, are lenders obliged to log a default at some point? One of the payday loans I took out, stupidly, a number of years back has logged late payments every month for the last 2+ years and this is definitely a major negative factor on my credit file. At least most of the defaults on my other accounts are coming up to 4 years old next year and show as aged.
