The TV Licence People are definitely scaremongers. Those vans can't detect a sausage

I'm sure there are genuine reasons not to pay a TV licence and hopefully the OP has a provable one

It was the bit about being inspired by a Facebook group which lit my blue touch paper so made me extra aware of giving the OP correct information.
