  • Old Barclays debt showing as a recurring 6 on credit file. Never defaulted

i had an overdraft with Barclays on a joint account which was my ex partners spending and dates back to about 20. I refused to pay it and he never did either. Barclays last sent me a letter about it in around 2010 but I've heard nothing since.
I have recently looked at my credit file and found that instead of an old default which would have disappeared by now, it is showing up as a new '6' every month so continually refreshing as a bad debt.
What should I do about this please - especially given the age of the debt? I want a new mortgage soon and won't get very far with this on my file. Thanks in advance for any help!

Repeated use of 6 payments late should not be used in place of a default (specifically mentioned in the ICO guidelines on filing a default - section 4). ICO Guidance - Filing defaults with credit reference agencies

Are they still reporting it as a 6 month in arrears? If so then they are misreporting it and they will have to report it correctly as a default in which case it would automatically fall off your credit history now given the age of it.
