Some Nationwide customers have been unable to withdraw money from cash machines or make purchases in stores this morning, the second embarrassing glitch to hit Britain’s biggest building society in two months. A spokesperson for the group said the issue had now been resolved and lasted less than an hour. They also stressed the issue was intermittent, meaning not all customers would have been affected. It is not the first time the bank has been beset by such issues. On June 15, Nationwide suffered an IT meltdown which left millions of its customers unable to access internet or mobile banking.

The glitch at the building society had also meant online payments were unavailable, although internet and mobile banking systems were back up-and-running by mid-morning. Last year, the bank was forced to apologise after many customers were left unable to make payments or use online banking services, and in September 2013, Nationwide suffered a similar glitch. The problems comes as more and more people choose to bank online or via a mobile app, putting a strain on lenders’ existing systems.
