How bosses at copycat website Taxreturngateway sang 'We're In The Money' as they racked up £7m in just FOUR MONTHS

The extraordinary success of a copycat website that enticed thousands of taxpayers to file their self-assessment tax returns for astronomical fees can be revealed today. Taxreturngateway generated revenue of £7million in just four months by charging customers up to £1,000 for processing their tax returns, an insider at Who4, the Sunderland-based owner of the website, has confirmed. An incredible number of taxpayers, some 13,000, used the site, paying an average fee of just over £500 for a service that is free if used via the official HM Revenue & Customs website. The site’s phenomenal success was based on the fact it would appear at the top of internet searches when people typed in keywords such as ‘self-assessment’ and also that it looked very similar to the official Revenue website.
