How bosses at copycat website Taxreturngateway sang 'We're In The Money' as they racked up £7m in just FOUR MONTHS
The extraordinary success of a copycat website that enticed thousands of taxpayers to file their self-assessment tax returns for astronomical fees can be revealed today. Taxreturngateway generated revenue of £7million in just four months by charging customers up to £1,000 for processing their tax returns, an insider at Who4, the Sunderland-based owner of the website, has confirmed. An incredible number of taxpayers, some 13,000, used the site, paying an average fee of just over £500 for a service that is free if used via the official HM Revenue & Customs website. The site’s phenomenal success was based on the fact it would appear at the top of internet searches when people typed in keywords such as ‘self-assessment’ and also that it looked very similar to the official Revenue website. After submitting basic information, users were asked to make payments online which they would do believing them to be for tax owing and that non-payment could lead to prosecution......Read more here
