Customers of Nationwide have been unable to access account information after computer problems struck at the building society. Online banking has been unavailable and some customers have been unable to access account details in branches. The building society has apologised and says that it is working as quickly as possible to fix the problem. It is not the first electronic failure to hit Nationwide. An error led to double payments being taken last July. Some 704,426 account holders saw money taken from their accounts twice on that occasion. Nationwide said that was caused by a "one-off human error".

Nationwide, the biggest building society in the UK, has about four million customers. Customers have complained that some services have been down for much of the day. The mutual, owned by its members, said that an IT issue was affecting services including its Online Bank. Britain's biggest building society was forced to apologise for the second banking glitch to hit its customers this week. A message on Nationwide's website read: 'We're sorry to have to tell you that our online bank is unavailable. 'We are making every effort to restore service as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause you.' The latest breakdown in Nationwide's banking services comes as a particular embarrassment for the mutual as it has launched a big push in recent months to win over disgruntled current account customers from the big High Street banks.....Read more here
