Court fee reforms target people who can afford costs
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has launched a consultation on fee remissions for courts and tribunals which proposes that those with savings of £3,000 will have to pay court fees. It claimed that the new plans will ensure that individuals who can afford to pay their civil court or tribunal fees will be expected to do so. Under the proposed reforms to the fee remissions system, fees will need to be paid if court fees are less than £1,000 and the individual has savings of more than £3,000. f the fees are less than £4,000, those who have more than £8,000 in savings will be required to pay. One of the main changes outlined in the consultation is a capital test. Under the current system there is no capital test so people on low income with large capital do not have to pay towards courts and tribunal fees.
