Banks have been urged to to ditch special accounts that charge customers as much as £180 a year for them to opt out of complicated and expensive overdraft charges - a measure regulators and consumer groups say should be free. HSBC, Lloyds TSB, Halifax, Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank will not allow customers to opt out of their unauthorised borrowing facilities unless they sign up to a separate account that charges a monthly fee. HSBC and Clydesdale Bank charge £15 a month, or £180 a year, for the alternative current accounts.
