Rising numbers of struggling borrowers are seeing their pay packets raided to square outstanding debts, new figures show. When someone falls behind on repayments, a lender can ask for a court order to take the money straight out of their wages each month. This debt collection method — called an ‘attachment of earnings’ — is growing in popularity because it is seen as less aggressive than using an agency to hound people in their homes. Lenders made 61,648 court applications in the year to last June — 15 pc more than in the previous 12 months.
