Natwest customers hit by technical problems
Customers of Natwest have reported problems with their bank accounts, with balances not being updated and online services unavailable. The bank confirmed it was experiencing technical issues and that "a number of customers" were affected. One small business owner told the BBC that the electronic system to pay staff was not working. Natwest said it was working hard to fix the problem and hoped to have it resolved as soon as possible. "We apologise for the inconvenience caused to our customers," the bank said. Bank customers who suffered knock-on costs during NatWest's IT meltdown will be reimbursed no matter who they bank with, its chief executive has said.
Stephen Hester, the chief executive of Royal Bank of Scotland Group, which owns Natwest, also promised free credit checks for people who fear that their lending status may have been affected because of their inability to pay bills in the crisis last month. However the taxpayer-owned bank stopped short of offering people compensation for the disruption, which left 17 million NatWest, RBS and Ulster Bank customers unable to move money, pay bills or see an accurate statement of their accounts. Millions more were hit by the knock-on effects. In an open letter to users of the MoneySavingExpert website, Mr Hester said that anyone who has incurred extra charges will be reimbursed, whether they are RBS group customers or not. RBS Group is still clearing up the chaos caused by a computer failure three weeks ago, with Ulster Bank's problems lingering for longer than those of Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest. An RBS spokesman said he did not know how many customers in total have been affected. Nor did he give an estimate of the ultimate bill that the bank is facing.
