War has broken out between banking giants Santander and Nationwide in the struggle to win £1billion of Isa cash from savers this March. Nationwide, through its Cheshire BS brand, will tomorrow crank up the rate on its leading Isa to 3.35 per cent to pip Santander to top spot in the savings tables. And its 18 month fixed-rate Isa will pay 4.05 per cent, which even beats Santander's 4 per cent table-topping two-year Isa. However, neither Cheshire deal allows transfers in - a severe drawback that nearly scuppered any hope of the building society making This is Money's five favourite Isas hot-list. Santander, on the other hand, does allow transfers in.
