The Ministry of Justice is likely to tender for commercial partners later this year to assist the recovery of unpaid court fines following a successful pilot scheme. Peter Handcock CBE, chief executive of HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS), told a committee of MPs this morning that he expected more work to be done with private firms on recovering debts owed to the Courts, even though the results of the pilot scheme were not yet available. In a previous Parliamentary committee evidence session, it was revealed that the MoJ ha used the services of three private firms in a pilot scheme to recover £602m of unpaid court fines.
The results of the pilot, which ended in January, have not yet been published.
