Bob Diamond, the chief executive of Barclays bank, has insisted that bankers can be "cuddly" as he apologised for past mistakes and said banks should never again have to rely on a state bail out.

He said banks need to accept responsibility for their role during the financial crisis, admitting they still have a long way to go before "winning back" public trust. Speaking on BBC Radio Four's Today programme, the banking chief said: "We can be cuddly; we want people to come into our branches. "We want to be seen that way but we know that we have a lot of work to do still."
