Halifax is increasing the charges one of its more popular current accounts, while axing a number of key benefits.

From September customers will have to pay £15 a month for the bank's "Ultimate Rewards" current account – a 20pc rise that means customers will now pay £180 a year for this account. At the same time Halifax will no longer offer customers purchase protection cover, travel accident cover, price promise or its discount card scheme.


Customers will still get worldwide family travel insurance, AA-breakdown cover, mobile phone insurance, home emergency cover and a fee-free £300 overdraft. From September this breakdown cover will include "homestart" assistance. However, the excess charged on all claims related to iPhones has been increased to £100.

The spokeswoman added: "We found that there was very low awareness about these other benefits and minimal claims were made.
