Welsh councils are owed more than £80m of council tax despite an annual increase in collection rates, official figures reveal.

A total of £1.05bn council tax was collected by Welsh councils from a possible £1.09bn in 2010/11, which represented an average collection rate of 96.6 per cent, up from 96.4 per cent the previous year.

This translated into a £4m increase in the collection of council tax in arrears to £28.8m, up from £24.8m for the 2009/10 period, according to statistic published by StatsWales on behalf of the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA).
