The part-nationalised lender said it was operating a "dual-track" process ahead of the planned disposal, although insiders suggested a sale remained the most likely option.
"We will look for a buyer, and if we need to, the initial public offering option is there," a spokesman added.
Lloyds has been ordered to sell the branches by European regulators after receiving a government bail-out at the height of the financial crisis. The disposal of the outlets could create Britain's seventh-largest bank with a value of more than £3bn, analysts have said.
Last week, Virgin Money said that it planned to bid for the branches. New UK bank NBNK is seen as another front-runner. Other bidders may include National Australia Bank and Tesco.
