Scottish Power raises gas and electricity prices

Scottish Power is to raise the cost of gas by 19% and the cost of electricity by 10%.

The utility firm said the increase, which would affect 2.4 million households in the UK, would come into effect from 1 August. Affected customers will see an average daily rise to a dual fuel energy bill of 48p per day.

The company said the move reflected sustained increases in the wholesale energy market. However, it said about 700,000 households would be protected by capped or fixed priced deals.

Watchdog Consumer Focus described the price rise as a "body blow for customers".

Scottish Power, which is part of Spanish company Iberdrola, last put its prices up in November, when gas prices rose 2% and electricity bills went up by 8.9%.

So your Scottish Gas has gone up by a Whooping 17% and Electric up by only 1.1%.....We are in the ~~market~~ again.....You know where the market money is to be made

  Aye, might end out being cheaper, being on a standard tariff, then you can switch without the hefty HIDDEN Admin charge for changing tariff whenever you like..........

  Energy companies could be forced to open their books to consumers because of a lack of evidence to justify a rise in prices, the head of the Commons energy and climate change select committee has suggested.
  
  Tim Yeo admitted that average increases of nearly £200 a year on energy bills announced by Scottish Power may not be "acceptable and reasonable" in relation to wholesale prices.
  
  He told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: "They certainly have not provided evidence to show that they are [acceptable and reasonable].
  
  "There is a very strong public suspicion, probably justified, that prices tend to go up faster than they come down. What we need is clear transparency from the companies to show that the prices they have had to pay on the wholesale market in the past three or four months justify this enormous increase, and the companies so far have not provided that."
  
  Mr Yeo added that energy companies had a "case to answer" and that the government could step in by giving Ofgem, the energy watchdog, the power to force them to open their.......Click HERE to read more
