Expensive debit and credit card surcharges are to be investigated by the Office of Fair Trading after the consumer group Which? lodged a so-called "super complaint" against them.

The OFT has 90 days to review practices such as credit/debt card booking fees for airline tickets and other surcharges for paying electronically. "Consumers are really fed up with paying excessive card charges", said Which? Chief Executive Peter Vicary-Smith.

"Low-cost airlines are some of the worst offenders, but excessive card surcharges are becoming ever more widespread, with everyone from cinemas and cabs to hotels and even some local authorities getting in on the act."
Which? has claimed most debit-card payments cost 20p to process and that companies pay no more than 2% of the transaction value to accept payment by credit card.
