  • National insurance number wrong

I phoned my pension provider as I wanted to find out details of my pension and while going through security they told me my national insurance number was different to what they had on record.
I had a next of kin letter 2 years ago to fill out where my national insurance number on there was wrong so I filled out the form and sent a covering letter saying they had the wrong national insurance number on it.
When I phoned them they said they never received it ?

I have now sent photocopies of my p60s from 2 different employers over the years, copies of my passport, driving licence, a copy of the next of kin letter from 2 years ago and even a letter from HMRC clarifying my national insurance number. I have now sent this to them by recorded post.
I'm starting to panic that the pension i paid into for 20 years may have issues when I try to pull the pension.
Obviously over the years someone has inputted my details incorrectly and now I'm having issues.

    Any advice welcome

Mistakes happen even in computerised systems.
      ???
      ???
There are many who share an NI number and do not know it until they claim to find someone else is drawing benefit from it. This stems from the manual allocation which would sometimes cause overlap especially Friday afternoon to Monday Morning when 2 people may be allocated the same number by mistake.

There are those that have multiple numbers. This occurs if they are not UK born and have reentered the country several time with different spelling or order if names.

In addition when changing from manual to automated systems and even updating existing systems, data xan be mis-typed or corrupted eg leaving certailn blocks out of step so that you have been allocated the NINO belonging to someone 10 places futher up and your NI may be allocated to the person 10 down. It happens and is not noticed until those affected raise the alarm.
      ??????
The pension company can validate the number against your name and date of birth with addresses and employers with HRMC. The pensions contributions, if made via your employer will be recorded. If made by you personally, ypur bank statements will show the payments.

As this is a financial transaction, money in pension out, maybe the Financial Ombudsman can help.

      Good luck.
