    Re: Public Liability Insurance Problem

Im thinking... tell em to F'off.
Your SIL did not agree to the costs nor was he even given the chance to get quotes for the work....sounds like a right stitch up to me.
Dispute the amount claimed and ask for substantiation of all the costs as the appear very excessive.

I have had another thought....I am good friends with a very experienced and honest insurance engineer who I could get to have a look at the estimate / bill and give you his opinion on the damage / cost of the repair.

PM me a copy of anything you have and I will pass on to him - delete all personel info 1st.

Just to be right B*****D with these jokers I would demand a full inspection of the vehicle and in detail the works they claim to have carried and an examination of the parts they claim to have removed from the vehicle. Its not unusual for a good inspector to find all sorts of things wrong. Inspection to be carried out on neutral territory for example your local authority vehicle depot. They, these days usually have MOT facilities, which must by law be open for public use. Not very well advertised I hasten to add. Pick a day when the ministry guys are there doing the LGV/HGV inspections for the council.

        Just a thought

I think they will have difficulty suing him, if they wont supply any detailed invoice, have they actually said they will take him to court?

But playing devils advocate here, he does owe them for the cost of repairing the car, so I assume it's just the actual amount he owes them is in question?

            Re: Public Liability Insurance Problem

From the circumstances described in the initial post yes he is liable.

He needs to write to the MD and ask for a copy of the invoice and the either the vehicle assessors report or the two estimates he assumes the MD obtained prior to authorising the repairs. He should mention in the letter that his information will be required by the court if proceedings are issued and that without the documents being provided he is not in a position to evaluate the amount claimed.

              Re: Public Liability Insurance Problem

Just an update on this, My Son in Law has written to the company and offered them payment over a few months and asked them to give him their payment details so he can set up a standing order but so far he has had no reply from them. So at the moment the ball is in their court so to speak.
