A true aviator and gentleman, a couple of years ago at an airshow in the US I had the pleasure of being at a lunch do where he was guest of honour.
He commanded a great deal of respect when he spoke of his exploits, which I might add, had to be coaxed out of him by the interviewer, he was a very reluctant hero.
There must have been maybe 500 people at the lunch, and when it was time to leave, he stood at the door and shook hands with every person there.
