                    man-eating (lion)

When my family visited the Royal Umpire Exhibition at Croston in the 1970s, the "Man Eating Lion" seemed to have taken a break. The cage was still there, though, complete with a stool in the centre and, of course, many of the eponymous chocolate bar wrappers strewn around.

The funniest aspects of that "exhibition" were the looks of confusion and bewilderment on the faces of other members of the public who seemed quite determined to take it seriously, despite all the signs that it was actually ludicrous nonsense. The "Wild West Town" seemed to have been largely fabricated from recycled crates and tea chests, although it had a few bits that were a bit more substantial. One of these was an enormous iron cauldron that stood at the edge of town and which, so there could be no mistake, was clearly labelled "pot for boiling missionaries".

To one side, there was a sign labelled "water otter" which led one along a path cleared through the undergrowth. The path wound back on itself a few times and, if I recall correctly, crossed itself at least once. Eventually, it opened into a small clearing around a shallow pond and there, mounted carefully on a pile of stones, was an old Ascot gas water heater. I burst out in uncontrolled laughter, though more at the puzzlement of a couple who had been there a few minutes longer than me, who insisted that they could neither see the otter nor espy where its lair might be.
