Hi thereI have just joined this site , I was approached by my grandson in tears , he is only 20 and not very worldly wise . Its turns out he has taken out 7 yes 7 payday loans and been overwhelmed by them . I am retired and have decided to help him . I have colleted all the debts on a spreadsheet and have permission to open all his post ( he has lived with us for most of his life -- his mother deserted him when he was young and his father -my son had drug problems .So im the only one he has got im 70 but determined to get him on the straight and narrow . Shall I start a diary and will you help ?

          Hello

I'm also a 'senior' (it seems there's only a year between your age and mine!) so I can identify with your determination to get your grandson on the straight and narrow.

I see it as good news that he felt he could approach you for help. Let's build on that.

Do you know why he took out the PDLs in the first place? Did he have personal issues which needed funding or a job loss etc?

This may lead to questions as to whether there was irresponsible lending involved.

Were the seven PDLs all with the same business or scattered across various PDL providers?

As The Tech Clerk has suggested Warwick65 knows a thing or two about PDLs so wait to see what he has to say next.

I'll keep an eye on your thread in the meantime.

          Di

              Hi
As Di says, I do have some experience with PDL's having had one or two in the past.

I don't want to just repeat what Di says but...
It is difficult to know what to advise without further details
Who were they with, were there rollovers i.e just paying the interest each month, were they high penalty charges, were there more than one with the same lender (remember often they have different trading names).

              Just a few random thoughts
Was your grandson working or on benefits, perhaps he was a student

When you post details do not put anything identifiable up such as account numbers or even exact amounts

He's lucky to have an understanding grandparent

There may well be irresponsible lending issues here as 7 is a lot of payday loans

Sorry , one last, very personal question- is there any reason why he needed the money, might be a substance misuse problem or maybe gambling . I only ask because if there is, he really needs to get help now so they don't reoccur.

Thank you Di , I might be getting to the finishing post but my mind is still as sharp as a tack . The PDL'S are 7 different firms . He is employed on agency work in a factory on a zero hours contract and met a girl and just kept buying her things , I think just to keep her . He said all he could think about was her . When he stopped buying her things she promptly dumped him and that's when I found him in tears as I said in my original post . He also had a car on finance which has been repossessed and just had a bill for 3500 for the remaining finance . The payday loans total round 3000 . My wife and I are pensioners and don't have that kind of money or I would pay it . So here I am . We could probably pay it if we were offered some low Fand F's . But im a feisty old sod and I have the time

Let's focus on the PDLs first.

The outstanding car finance issue won't go away so let's look at that next before the situation escalates. Who was the finance with and was it a voluntary repossession where he threw in the towel and handed back the keys (had he paid 50%?) or something else?

What can I say- oh to be young and in love - no thank you! Oh and of course women! (I'll now hide from Di).

I think it may be worth making affordability complaints against all the companies. Now remember they will probably refuse so you will need to go to the Fos but as you are a stubborn bugger that will help.

here is a decent guide to getting them https://debtcamel.co.uk/payday-loan-refunds

My only concern would be, was your grandson honest when he applied - don't get me wrong there are degrees of honesty - he may have embellished his work hours at one end and at the other he may have 'doctored' documents . At the good end, well they should have checked him out, at the other end, well you might want a rethink. I am not suggesting he did the worse of the two but its worth you knowing.

                          I'd continue with this thread

Make a separate post for each PDL debt because the circumstances/advice may be different for each account.

Just a few points before I start posting the lists , according to my grandson all the payday loans were done via smartphone which is now defunct because it went under the wheels of a forklift truck in the factory where he works . So all I have to go on is the paperwork that is arriving so ill work off that . Thank you for your nice introductions and comments . But Warwick in one post you are saying its wonderful he has a understanding grandparent and in another suggesting I should have a rethink !! and using words like embellishment and doctoring , he is in a very fragile state at the moment . I came on here for help not instant judgements !!.
