I think that when MP's were unpaid things were still as dubious as they are today.

One of my old Bosses father was MP for Coventry in the 30's and 40's. I think he only went to Coventry a couple of times for if the family were not in London they were on their 100,000 acre Highland Estate.

If the early part of the last century wasn't bad enough it was even worse before and they still refer to the British Parliament as the Mother of Democracy

That's the problem we have with local counsellors now, when it was done for the good of the neighborhood you knew the bloke/woman was on your side, local bods around here get 50k a year - expenses mind, just expenses they keep telling us - twats!!

Lets have a real government, no one can be an MP until they have at least 10 years experience in the workplace as an employeee, bollox to Eton and Harrow, these twats represent chinless wonders and a small tortoise called Rodney - gits!!!

I know its off topic but I don't care!

That's why I now take headline grabbers like this with a shovel full of salt. If they are having a go at the Beeb it's probably because they want a favour in return for not digging too deeply.

Just checked the VAT threshold is currently 77K and an MP's basic Salary 65.7k a Cabinet Minister receiving 138K. The official page says MP's pay Tax on their Salaries at the appropriate rate. That's always considering that they are paid at source. But what about the people like Grant Shapps aka Michael Green who's web based business charges in Dollars and isn't registered as a business in the US or registered with them for Tax.

Not wanting to get too political on this one, for If I had a way of reducing my Tax liability I would use it.

But People in Glass Houses really shouldn't throw stones.

    Regards, Handy

Surely the income for an MP is above the threshold anyway, they should be paid PAYE in my opinion, then they could preach!

I recently saw a link to companies House where the Houses Of Parliament are registered as a Limited Company and The Labour Party as Alistair Darling Ltd

So Agreed, No way should they try to take the moral high ground, while the likes of you and I have to pay the full amount.
