I rather doubt that the number of plods has significantly declined.

The problem was probably caused by a creeping authoritarianism in police "canteen culture", leading to a feeling of resentment among certain young, ethnic groups.

The spark was the killing of well respected, father of four Mark Duggan, who was apparently unarmed; reports in the Grauniad - link - and the Metro - link suggest that the bullet lodged in a police radio was a hollow-point round, fired from one of the police guns by someone from CO19, the death squad ordered by Cressida Dickhead to slaughter Jean Charles de Menezes.

As usual, the plods were slow to keep the family of their victim informed, whilst all manner of sensationalist speculation has appeared in the news media; for example, it has been claimed that Mr Duggan was a crack dealer but, when one considers that similar claims were made following the deaths of Jean Charles de Menezes and James Ashley, one sees the usual pattern of "blame the victim".

The military are adaptable and can work in a humanitarian way, I remember some years ago when there was flooding in Chichester the military did a fantastic job pumping the water away and installing temporary bridges.

They have also assisted the fire services before now.

The military do not need guns to do a job in a democratic country, just the numbers will help to calm the situation.

Maybe they did?, Maybe they decided not to do anything about it as they are being cut in numbers or Senior Staff resigning enmass.

They could call a curfew in the trouble spots and send in some troops, Oh I forgot we are making half the Army Redundant as well.

Think they would be happy coming home from Afghanistan to find their homes and communities wrecked and then have to sign on.

Well he is an old Etonian, he's probably sent his Fag to deal with it.

Seriously, I was just trying to remember whether it was the late 70's or early 80's that similar kicked off last time. The Country was close to being knacker'd then.

Problem is I can't sympathize with the rioters as my opinion is that the vast majority are only there to loot or to attack the Police (for their own reasons) and not for any legitimate political protest.

The last time this happened the majority of rioters were from what may be termed an ethnic minority.

These days I feel like I an in a minority.

I cant see trouble kicking off down here, not unless they come to steal the Scrumpy, but if I was living in the City I would reserve the right to protect Me and Mine and Sod Cameron and his Big Society

    Regards Handy
