Thanks PF, its usually amusing when I tell the doc that because having peeled him from the ceiling ( 'cause of the heart thingy) he tells me that is not available on prescription, we have a laugh, he checks me out and we move forward. Thats why I consider my self lucky over this particularly when we are dealing with the problems of OH's brother and seeing the poor souls in the care homes we have to visit.

Those that have never experienced this have little comprehension of what happens. Its like a tidal wave which sweeps you off your feet and there is nothing and I mean nothing you can do about it at the time.

And no Ames you did not belittle those of us who have come through it at all, so don't worry. Deep down there are many of us who realise fully when we see this who do think we are lucky and have to remember:-

Garlok,

Our mum in Law who lives with us is showing the first signs of dementia, she gets very forgetful now and I did not fully realize until she sent me to the chemist on monday to collect a prescription, got there and there was not one to collect as she did not put one into the docters.

She will have silly arguments with my wife over a misunderstanding now I know my wife is going to find it very hard to deal with this as they are like two peas in a pod.

Our mum in law does not even know or had it diagnosed but it is there as I can see it clear as mud being someone on the outside so to speak.

Think I am going to need help on this because if we tell her to get it checked out she will go into a rage and not believe it and call us all the names under the sun for suggesting it.

hhhmmmmm much thought needed on how to handle this.

PF, no thoughts on what to do but hugs, my grandma had dementia, but she lived alone and we only found out when the police started bringing her home after she'd been found wandering or caught shoplifting.

Hi PF,

This is damn difficult as we lost OH's Mom due to Alzheimers as you know. The early stages were awful as she became aggressive, forgetful, missed words from sentences and the like. Then the wandering started, day and night, false accusations over money and theft. There were those in the family as well that could not accept what was happening to her and that makes it even harder. The only thing I can suggest at this stage mate is to try and get her GP on board with you. We have got round the objections et al with another family member ( or preferably two) going to the docs with the patient and then suggesting a cuppa for them, then one staying behind to discuss the situation alone with the doc having primed the GP by letter or phone call beforehand. A lot of GPs are much more clued up than they used to be and many are much more sympathetic. We eventually got M I L to go for some "specialist care and recuperation" i.e. assessment and she didn't come home again I'm afraid. But at least we knew she was being cared for properly and the worry of being called out in the middle of the night when we were in your neck of the woods 150 miles away.

This left F I L to concentrate on the brother who is now in full time care so the load was lifted quite a bit.

PF,

I feel for you mate! We look after our neighbour much of the time and she has dementia. It is incredibly hard work.

It is also a very emotive subject for anyone directly involved. Seeing a loved one develop any illness is a terrible thing.

Thanks m8, yes writing to the GP that is a good idea Ill try that next week, she has not started wandering yet and very much in its early stages, however the sooner it is diagnosed the better I am told.

Also easier on us as a family if we jump on it early and get the right people involved.

Thats good PF. They have newer medications now which we are told are effective in slowing down this horrible process.
