Money could be unexpectedly taken from people's bank accounts without explanation under controversial plans to allow the taxman to delay telling people about changes to their tax codes for a month. Proposals to give HM Revenue & Customs new powers are set to be laid before Parliament later this year, and among them is a change in the law that will give the taxman 30 days before it has to inform employees of a change in their tax code. Currently, workers are told about any changes as soon as they happen, and implementing the proposals could mean taxpayers take unexpected hits to their wage packets that would impact on their ability to budget. It will also mean it could take up to a month before people realise if they have become one of the five million-plus workers every year who are victims of errors in the Pay-as-you-earn system.
