BT told to refund thousands of pounds to customers who were not warned of high cost of calls

BT has been ordered to refund thousands of pounds to customers it overcharged in a £2.39-a-minute directory enquiries rip-off. Customers who dialled the service were kept hanging on the premium-rate line without being warned of the high cost of the calls. Many of the victims who suffered “bill shock” when their calls were unfairly dragged out were elderly people and vulnerable users. One customer is thought to have run up an £81 bill while another was charged more than £450 over three months for using the number-finding service, a tribunal heard. BT was found to have failed to make its charges clear to callers kept waiting on its 118 500 inquiry number.
