Fears are growing that hundreds of homes and businesses have been left owing thousands to water companies after a firm which promised to pay their bills suddenly stopped trading. SmartSource Drainage and Water Reports, which traded as SmartSource Water, promised customers it would slash 8.3 per cent off average water bills. It promised a risk-free service, with no upfront costs or registration fees and no hidden charges. Customers, both homeowners and small businesses, would pay their water bills directly to the company, which was set up by former water company executives. SmartSource would then act as a middleman between the customer and the water firm.
