Statistics released by Registry Trust for the first half of 2013 show that consumers in England and Wales are being pursued through the courts for smaller debts with the average now at £2,601. Registry Trust collates judgment information throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. In England and Wales it runs the Register of Judgments Orders and Fines for the Ministry of Justice. The value of debt judgments issued against consumers in county courts in England and Wales has by 12 percent even though the number of judgments rose. In the first six months of 2013 the total value of debt judgments was £638.2m compared with £727.7m in the same period last year, a fall of £84.5m. The number of judgments registered against consumers increased from 239,085 last year to 245,424 this year. The drop in value is the result of smaller debts being pursued through the courts.
