Computer glitches left HM Revenue & Customs struggling with a flood of data over the weekend at the start of the biggest shake-up in PAYE for 70 years.
Companies were frustrated at delays caused by bi-annual maintenance work on HMRC systems and were amazed that routine updates had been scheduled to take place alongside a major change in the way payroll information is collected. Sage, one of the computer software companies involved in providing the new data reporting systems, said many businesses reported difficulties with submissions when the Real Time Information went live on Saturday.
They were confronted by a message saying: “We’re currently testing the service and experiencing lengthy delays to submissions.” HMRC denied there were “glitches” in the system and said the weekend work involved updating IT systems with the latest tax and revenue data.
