George Osborne must “man up” and cut spending on welfare, pensioners and the NHS or Britain will become an economic “basket case”, senior Tory MPs have warned.

A succession of government aides and Conservative backbenchers called yesterday for radical tax cuts in the Budget to encourage businesses to hire more staff and kick-start economic growth. New infrastructure projects such as motorways and airports should be built and ministers should stop attacking immigration to attract more bright business people from overseas, the MPs suggested.
