Consumers who switched their energy supplier to First Utility are facing delays of up to a month because the company has been swamped by demand.

Up to 50,000 customers are thought to have been affected by the delay. The company has written to them to apologise and has withdrawn its tariffs from price comparison websites to cut demand while it sorts out the problem. First Utility has been attracting customers by offering cheap deals following the price rises announced by all the "Big Six" suppliers.
