Bank customers may be forced to pay to run their current account. As pressure mounts on the industry to rethink its entire business model, regulators and the Bank of England have suggested consumers could gain from more transparent charges. Sir David Walker, incoming chairman of Barclays, is the latest industry figure to endorse an end to free banking. But he attracted sharp criticism for suggesting that charging fees would help to reduce mis-selling scandals. About one in five customers has been persuaded to sign up for packaged accounts, paying a monthly fee for a range of extras.
