Every day, thousands of Britons are turned down for loans and mortgages on the basis of the records held on them by the three big credit agencies. Often these rejections are for genuine reasons, such as missed payments following a job loss. But others are made because information held by the agencies is simply wrong. Figures from consumer watchdog the Financial Ombudsman Service reveal a 74 pc jump in the number of complaints about the agencies and lenders over the past year. hese mistakes can have a devastating effect.
