Cirencester Friendly Society has called on providers of income protection insurance to reveal their claims figures amid concerns that many are not paying out because of onerous policy conditions. Income protection insurance promises to pay a monthly tax-free benefit when a policyholder cannot work because of illness. But payouts are often refused because many policies are written on an ‘any occupation’ basis, meaning claimants cannot get a payout unless they are unable to carry out the simplest of tasks, such as holding a pen.
