Complaints about mortgages shot up almost 40 per cent in the second half of last year, it was revealed today, as the most complained about financial services companies were set to be named and shamed.

But complaints about financial products overall fell by a third, according to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS), with the number of disputes about payment protection insurance (PPI) falling sharply. In total, the ombudsman service received 106,193 new complaints between July and December last year compared with almost 150,000 during the previous six months.
