When Ricky Kasabi spoke to his bank over the phone about his credit card, he knew he’d be asked several security questions to authenticate his identity. He duly told the call centre staff at Santander Bank his month of birth – July – and was then asked his house number. A simple question, it would seem.

But when Mr Kasabi replied ‘8’, he was told he had answered incorrectly and was frozen out of his account. Even when he spoke to Santander again the next day, the conversation ended when he gave the same answer – even though he does indeed live at number 8 on his street in West Hampstead, London.
