This is Money is warning all victims of insurance mis-selling to hang up on cold-calling claims management firms, as a special Ministry of Justice investigation targets an industry riddled with malpractice

An undercover This is Money investigation found evidence of claims vultures lying about the multi-billion-pound PPI (payment protection insurance) mis-selling racket that has infested the UK. Greedy cold-callers, spurred on by commission payments that can be worth up to 30 per cent of a customer's refund, on several occasions tried to mislead our reporters, who were posing as victims.

Their lies included:

- One firm said the only way to get 'cash' refunds was through their services;

- Another claimed his firm's financial advisers already knew all our reporter's personal details;

- A third said it could speed up the refund process.

All three statements are untrue.
