Shoppers and workers in town centres are being stung with huge hikes in car parking charges - with the worst example Doncaster seeing on-street parking charges soar 125 per cent in three years, according to figures. Data obtained by the Co-Operative Motor Group under a freedom of information request revealed that local council income from parking services raises £1.35billion a year. The group said that excluding penalty charge notice income, English local authorities raised an extra £184million for parking charges in 2010, compared with 2007.
