Imposters claiming to be from Carlisle’s Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) are using cold calls to prey on people with money problems and offer them fake debt help.
CAB chiefs said that no genuine advice bureau would ever call people out of the blue offering to set up a debt management plan and urged anyone receiving such a call or text to alert Action Fraud.
CAB manager Andy Auld urged anyone getting a bogus call to end it as quickly as possible and never to give or confirm any personal information. He said: “This is a despicable scam that trades on public trust in our service. “We were horrified when someone who wasn’t an existing client contacted us to find out how we knew they were in debt and told us they had had a call from one of our advisers.
