Two-thirds of homeowners who complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service about being ripped off when buying pricey home emergency cover are having their disputes upheld — and receiving compensation. But many have fallen foul of small print, in particular signing up for a free period and then later finding they have been charged for the policy without their permission.

Some also discover their claims are being turned down because workmen they get in aren’t approved by the insurer or they already have cover under their home insurance policy — and so are paying twice needlessly. The revelation will encourage home emergency policyholders to complain if they feel fobbed off. The ombudsman service, which settles disputes between consumers and insurers, has received more than 800 complaints about these policies in the past six months.
