UPDATE:
A group of powerful MPs has grilled Lloyds Banking Group and Royal Bank of Scotland for 'targeting' vulnerable customers by blocking cash machine use at rival banks.
The two banks, bailed-out by the taxpayer in 2008, no longer allow their basic current account holders to use ATMs operated by HSBC, Barclays, Santander or any other bank or building society. Consumer group Which? has warned the moves will herald a cash machine 'war' if other banks follow their lead. In response, the influential cross-party Treasury Select Committee has written to the top bosses at Lloyds and RBS demanding an explanation.
Andrew Tyrie, the Committee's chairman, wrote: 'Your decision has major implications for access to universal banking customers and appears to target vulnerable customers who are most at risk of financial exclusion.'
