An inquiry by a committee of MPs heard from accountants and taxpayers about how they thought HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) seemed to be operating on "auto-pilot". Witnesses to the inquiry explained how it was difficult to reach HMRC by phone, written correspondence went for weeks without reply, and some claimed they could not get the help they needed, even if they were able to speak to someone. Naturally, at the time, HMRC saw things differently. But now HMRC and representatives of the UK's major tax and accountancy bodies have agreed to work together to help improve the taxpayer's experience when dealing with HMRC.
