Businesses whose premises have been looted in the riots have 42 days to make their claims under the Riot Damages Act, using a form drafted in the 19th century.

Claimants must describe the circumstances in which the riot took place, giving evidence which shows "that the injury, stealing or destruction was committed by persons riotously and tumultuously assembled together".

The 1886 Riot Damages Act allows businesses to claim for damage to their property and stock, regardless of whether they have insurance. Usually, claims must be lodged within 14 days of the riot but David Cameron, the Prime Minister, has extended that deadline to 42 days.

He has also pledged a temporary suspension of council tax and business rates for seriously affected premises, in order to help them get back on their feet. However, businesses could still face difficulties recovering their money if the police were to argue that there was in fact no....
