Nearly half a million people had to chase the taxman for rebates last year, according to figures by insurer Royal London. Switching jobs or being subject to changes in taxable benefits are common reasons why people might have paid too much tax, says HM Revenue & Customs. Becky O'Connor, a personal finance specialist at Royal London, says: 'Nearly half a million people tried to get overpaid income tax back from HMRC in the past tax year.
